S3This is Helen's Story

The idea of working with teenagers had crossed my mind – I wouldn’t and I couldn’t! However, as a church we were challenged by Jackie Pullinger to do small acts of kindness.  Over a short period of time it became increasingly more right that one of the small acts of kindness we were being asked to take on was opening a Drop-in Centre for the teenagers who would otherwise hang around the streets.
Although I was convinced that this was what God was asking us to do, I wasn’t sure he was asking me – I didn’t know the right teenage language, understand the music, know about the current fashion trends – so each preparation meeting I went to before we set up Space I attended with much trepidation.  I had so many ‘what ifs’ in my head, ‘what if this awful thing happened, and so on’ but in my heart I knew that I should be helping on a Friday night.
It hasn’t been easy as many of the teenagers in Kinross are exposed to the same pressures of alcohol, drugs and sex that we read and hear so much about in the media.  We have been open every Friday night during school times and holidays for the last four years and still the teenagers who come to the Millbridge hall face the same dilemmas of underage drinking etceteras.  We have not solved the problems:  however God didn’t ask us to do a great miracle... we were simply asked to perform small acts of kindness and that I believe is what we should be doing.
There is no charge of any kind to come to the Millbridge Hall – as Christians  here in Kinross, we believe that providing a safe haven and a drink of juice and crisps, plus a friendly face and ear, is what we have been called to do. We pray for the kids who come in and on a few very special occasions we have been able to pray with them. We are simply there for them.  We don’t have any quick fix answers or solutions but we do know that all things are possible with God.
At the moment, due to family and work commitments, I alternate with another Christian and do every other Friday night.  It would be fair  to say that the thought of going over to the Millbridge Hall on a Friday night can be daunting, especially if it has been a busy tiring week. However, I truly believe that SPACE is probably thee most important time of my fortnight and that it has been a pleasure and a privilege to get to know some of our teenagers in Kinross as people.
If you have any questions or would like to know more you would be welcome to contact me or to visit the Millbridge Hall any Friday night between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
